How do I know if I have the right foundation for me?

The L’Oreal Paris Make-up Artist and author of Make-Up, The Ultimate Guide and Express Make-Up (Allen & Unwin) answers your beauty questions.

RAE MORRIS SAYS:

Quite simply, it should make your skin look more healthy and youthful. It should camouflage any lines and wrinkles and make your skin appear dewy, with a beautiful glow.

Your foundation should not only match the colour of the skin on your face, but that on your neck and décolletage, too. This sounds tricky, but it’s not – simply test your foundation on your décolletage. If it disappears when you apply it, it’s the right one.

Never test foundation on your neck – it is the palest part of your body. This is why you often see women in pictures with browner bodies and pale faces.  It’s also important to remember that your skin can change colour up to three shades between winter and summer. For this reason, every woman should have two or three foundations shades in her make-up case. You can alternate between them, and even blend them to get the exact shade for you at any time of the year.

Bear in mind that if you have a spray or fake tan, you will need to match your foundation to the colour you are when you have the tan, too.
