A Red Letter Year

Author Anita Loos once decreed that gentlemen prefer blondes but marry brunettes. Redheads didn’t get a look-in. Throughout history there’s been a love-hate relationship with hair the shades of flame. Redheads have been attributed with bold personalities and short (aka fiery) tempers, and said to be adventurous, unafraid and mischievous. While these characteristics are the stuff of myth, 2010 has certainly lent credence to it. Is it mere coincidence that our first female Prime Minister, Julia Gillard’s titian hair has taken on a more vivid hue since her ascension to the top job and hitting the election trail?

Christina Hendricks

Men are mad for Mad Men’s flame-haired siren Christina Hendricks – as are women for making curves, and lots of them, the year’s hottest fashion accessory. Breaking the bombshell mould, Christina has also revealed she is in fact a natural born blonde. She became a redhead at age 10 to channel her storybook heroine, Anne of of Green Gables. She’s never looked back.

Voted “Hollywood’s Hottest Redhead” in 2007, Kate has said: “When I was blonde, they treated me like a girly girl. As a redhead, it was a little more sassy.”
