You don’t have to pay a fortune to give a “lift” to your face. Choose one of these options and get more bang for your buck.

You don’t have to pay a fortune to give a “lift” to your face. Choose one of these options and get more bang for your buck.

SPEND A FRUGAL $50 WITH THIS CREAM
Signs of ageing are targeted with this super-duper cream that certainly won’t break the bank. Olay Regenerist Superstructure Cream SPF30, RRP$49.99, contains an amino-peptide complex, which works on premature ageing and has great hydrating power. A fine alternative for those who hate injections, this cream helps boost collagen production. As the Aussie sun is known as a skin culprit of ageing, this contains an SPF30 to block direct DNA-damaging UV rays to help protect skin structural integrity. The formula is most effective in the prevention of ageing before your time.

SPEND $120 FOR AN ACUPUNCTURE FACELIFT
The only needles used in this facelift are traditional Chinese acupuncture ones. “It’s a non-invasive approach to facial rejuvenation,” says Claire O’Mara, acupuncturist and clinical nurse specialist at All Saints Cosmedical Clinics, Sydney. Working on the principle that beauty radiates from the inside out, and designed for each individual, Claire says this “facelift” helps you “eliminate fines lines” or “diminish larger wrinkles around the eyes, nose and forehead” as circulation is improved, “nourishing, toning and boosting the elasticity of the skin”. Ultra-fine needles are strategically placed locally in the face to improve a specific area such as the frown line between the eyes. Says Claire: “There are no long-lasting side effects or allergic reactions, and this cosmetic acupuncture doesn’t compromise facial mobility.” Single treatments are $120, but a course of 10-15 sessions are recommended for best results, with top-up treatments every month.

Peel Off!

Audrey Hepburn Under The Knife

Erase Wrinkles In Seconds

SPEND $550 AND HAVE NO MORE SMOKER’S LIPS
A pursed, wrinkled lip area, often due to smoking, can bring the whole look of the face down. “Vertical lip lines have a particular ageing effect on the face,” says Dr Peter Bakaric, of Sydney’s Collagen Face Centre. To fix this and get rid of the ageing, fatigued look, Dr Bakaric suggests injecting a filler such as Esthelis directly under the vertical lines. “I also inject the filler in a ‘cross-hatch’ pattern under and at right angles to the lines to provide support structure under the skin which minimises creasing of the superficial layer of the skin.” When there is a problem of lipstick bleeding, the vermillion border can also be injected to “prevent lipstick ‘riding’ up the fine lines.” Dr Bakaric says the person will look “less weathered” and “more youthful”. Cost is around $550 and lasts about six months.

SPEND $1000 AND GET A BROWLIFT WITH ULTHERAPY
Ultherapy uses sound waves to safely firm and lift skin tissue without affecting the skin’s surface. Acoustic sound energy goes deep into the skin where cells are formed. This triggers the body’s natural healing process which results in strengthened collagen fibres, which work to firm or lift. Says Dr Warwick Nettle, of Sydney’s Silkwood Medical, “Ultherapy is extremely effective at lifting and firming.” People who suffer from brow droop can use Ultherapy to non-invasively firm up the tissue. You can also do the full face or neck, but this will cost more than the $1,000. After numbing cream is applied, the hand-held device is moved section by section over the areas to be treated. There may be some discomfort deep in the skin. Treatment takes about 30-plus minutes, and you may be pink afterwards. But soon your skin will be tauter and refreshed. Expect this to last12 to 18 months. (The full face costs about $3,500.)

A COOL $2000 FOR A LIQUID LIFT
“Cheek lifting has become a popular and simple procedure to provide lifting to sagging facial structures,” says Dr Peter Bakaric. “As we age facial tissues tend to sag with the effects of gravity.” He adds, “Higher and fuller cheekbone structure provides a more youthful look.”

Using the non-permanent hyaluronic-acid-based dermal filler Fortelis, which lasts 12 to 18 months, the process takes about 30 minutes and can “mimic surgical lifting”.

After an assessment and local or topical anesthesia applied in the areas to be treated, the dermal filler is injected into the appropriate zones and molded into position. Once this is done, an icepack is applied and normal activities can be resumed instantly.

“A repeat treatment may be required, and typically one to three sessions are required with Fortelis,” he comments. “One treatment of 1ml of Fortelis can cost $600, but usually 2-4ml or product is used, which cost up to around $2,000.” If you have an aversion to needles you may prefer the permanent filler, Aquamid, which lasts about seven years.

Says Dr Bakaric: “The end result is a pleasant and natural lifting to the cheek and mid-face areas.”

SPEND $4000 AND REVITALISE YOUR WHOLE VISAGE
If the face staring back at you in the mirror looks older than you feel, Thermage is the perfect non surgical treatment for lifting your face (and the added benefit of taking the neck with it).

It is a non-invasive skin tightening procedure that uses capacitive radio frequency (CRF) technology called ThermaCool to heat up the collagen in the deeper layers of the skin and its underlying tissue, while simultaneously protecting the outer layer of the skin with a cooling system.

“Thermage tightens and lifts the skin, and works especially well to define and smooth the jawline and give the cheeks a lift with virtually no downtime,” says Dr Mei-Heng Tan, of Skin Savvy in Sydney.

“It takes about one and a half hours depending on areas treated and, with a good result, changes can be seen almost immediately and are permanent. This same process can also be used effectively to firm and tone sagging skin on the thighs, buttocks and arms, and may help the appearance of cellulite.”

Depending on the practitioner and areas treated, Thermage for the face can cost between $3800-$4200.

A woman posing as a doctor has been arrested after injecting a client with cement, flat tyre sealant and mineral oil. The fake doctor allegedly used superglue to seal the incisions.

The victim, a nightclub worker who wanted a ‘curvier body’, had the injections in her buttocks by Oneal Ron Morris.

Morris, 30, who was born a man but now identifies as a woman, was charged with practicing medicine without a licence with serious bodily injury.

In May 2010 the victim, who cannot be named, spent $US700($721) to receive a series of injections.

According to Miami Gardens Police Sergeant Bill Bamford, the victim was reluctant to come forward but was eventually brought into hospital on her mother’s urging.

Doctors at the hospital alerted the Department of Health as they understood that “no licensed physician in his right mind would ever do this”, Bamford said.

Sergeant Banford also feared Morris had performed on others, “we believe (she’s) done this to other people.”

There’s been a spate of “mother knows best” stories in the international press recently. Most of them eagerly pointing out that rubbing your eyes too hard can lead to sagging skin and more wrinkles and biting your nails really does weaken them. But you don’t need to reach back in time to find beauty myths. Almost as soon as one old wives tale bites the dust, a new “falsie” takes its place. Or, worse, ideas that have no basis in fact or are not medically proven start to be taken as gospel. Here’s 10 of the top misconceptions you can live without.

1. If You Don’t Keep Using Dermal Fillers To Plump Your Pout, Your Lips Will Sag As Soon As They Wear Off
FALSE. Injectable fillers simply add volume by being dispersed between the existing fibres and cells of the lips. They do not damage the flesh or tissue in any way. As the filler is absorbed by the body and disappears, the lips return to their previous condition. If you have repeated injections over a few years and then stop, your natural lip line may have become thinner over time. This myth arose because many women get used to seeing themselves with a fuller mouth and “forget” how their lips looked before the plumping treatments.

2. Using Pore Strips Shrinks Enlarged Pores
FALSE. Pore-reducing strips claim to “shrink” pores through the removal of excess oil and dirt. Unproven, say dermatologists. The size of pores is a consequence of enlarging oil glands surrounding them and natural ageing. All the topical application of pore strips can do is to reduce the appearance of large pores – not their actual size. But you can also make them look less prominent with “cheat” products such as Clinique Pore Refining Solutions Instant Perfector, $44, clinique.com.au.

The Right Concealer

Quick Beauty Fixes At Every Age

5 Anti-Ageing Foundation Tricks

3. Doctors Always Break The Nose During Rhinoplasty
FALSE. The most common reason women undergo rhinoplasty is to correct a nasal bump. Cutting or breaking the nose bone is not necessary. But if a patient wants to narrow the nose the surgeon may have to make internal incisions in the nasal bones and re-position them. This can cause significant swelling under the eyes and bruising but the results are worth it.

4. Oil-Free Creams and Foundations Veto Break-Outs
FALSE. For anyone with blemish-prone skin, the first thing you should remove from your life is excess oil in moisturisers and make-up. But oil-free creams and foundations still have to have “slip” on the face for easy application. Cosmetic manufacturers often use silicones to create the desired texture, and these can irritate the skin and cause pimples. Consult a dermatologist or facialist if breakouts persist instead of self-diagnosing your skin.

5. Liposuction Can Remove Cellulite
FALSE. If liposuction “cured’ cellulite most cosmetic surgeons would be able to retire much earlier. Liposuction removes fat and re-contours and sculpts, but has no effect whatsoever on cellulite. The orange peel look of cellulite is due to fat bulging out of pockets of connective tissue close to the surface of the skin. Liposuction targets deeper layers of fat. If you are slim and suffer from cellulite, liposuction cannot solve the problem.

6. Pockmarks and Acne Scars Fade Over Time
FALSE. The red and purplish marks of acne cysts and large pimples do slowly vanish, but scars and acne pits do not. The gold standard of acne mark treatment is the Fraxel laser. If the depressions are deep enough, injectable fillers such as collagen and hyaluronic acid can offer improvement.

7. You Can Never Use Too Much Eye Cream
FALSE. You certainly can. Women in their 20s and early 30s often use products designed for women in their 40s to “prevent” potential lines around the eyes. What happens when you put too-rich creams on eyes that don’t need the extra help? You develop puffy, over-fed eyes that make you look older. Worse still, you can develop milia, tiny white fat deposits that form under the delicate eye area that can only be safely removed by a dermatologist.

Gels and serums are a much better option for women under 40. They pat on more easily and are fluid rather than oil-rich. There’s no worry about rubbing them in too hard and they don’t over-feed the eye area, which has no pores to absorb excess eyecare products. Try: SkinCeuticals AOX+ Eye Gel, $129.90, 1800 242 011, Olay Regenerist Anti-Ageing Eye Roller, $32.49, mass retailers and pharmacies and Biore Rejuvenate Cooling Eye Gel, $16.99, Priceline, supermarkets and pharmacies.

8. Skin Becomes “Habituated” To Skincare Products Such As Moisturisers and Lip Balms So They Become Less Effective
FALSE. Many women stick with the same products – and amounts – that suited their skin when they were in their 20s and then wonder why they don’t “work” any more when they reach their mid-30s. Your skin hasn’t become “habituated” to your moisturiser, its needs have changed and natural oil production has slowed. Oil gland activity in the skin is affected by the internal endocrine system and is not influenced by the topical application of a lotion or cream.

If you find that your moisturiser has become less effective, it’s time to upgrade to a new one more suitable for your current age. Lips also dry as we grow older so if your favourite lip balm isn’t doing the trick anymore, choose a more emolllient one such as Carmex Moisture Plus Ultra Hydrating Lip Balm, $8.99, pharmacies and selected supermarkets or Natio Paw Paw Lip Balm, $7.95, natio.com.au.

9. Spider And Varicose Veins Are Caused By Crossing Your Legs Too Much
FALSE. The positioning of your legs has nothing to do with either problem. Spider veins are often hereditary or are the result of pregnancy. Many women develop spider veins as they age and they are also common among women on hormone replacement therapy. Easily treated with lasers or sclerotherapy, spider veins are not a health risk and are mainly removed for aesthetic reasons.

The cause of varicose veins can also be genetic. The danger of varicose veins is an increased risk of stasis in the blood, which can lead to blood clots. Support hose and not spending too much time sitting down can relieve the problem. But always see a doctor if varicose veins become too unsightly or uncomfortable.

10. Spritzing Your Face With Water Is A Great Way To Hydrate Your Skin
FALSE. It’s actually a great way to DEHYDRATE it. In fact, as water evaporates off the skin it takes moisture with it. Spritzing your skin can give your face a boost – especially before you apply a moisturiser – but you must use a moisture spray that contains humectants (moisture-binding ingredients) to keep the moisture in the skin. Good buys: A’kin Pure Rose Hydrating Mist, $21.95, purist.com and Benefit b.right Ultra Radiance Facial Re-Hydrating Mist, $47, benefitcosmetics.com.

Did you believe any or all of these myths? What questions would you like to ask one of the Younger You beauty team?

Don't be embarrassed on the sand this summer - savvy solutions to the top 10 beach body problems.

Most of us can’t wait for the arrival of summer – long days, endless sunshine and a more relaxed vibe. But hot days and balmy nights also mean revealing more skin.
Who hasn’t sought the protection of a body-covering caftan when heading for the beach to hide even minor skin flaws? Here’s a step-by-step guide to solving some common body problems:

INGROWN HAIRS

Around the bikini line especially, ingrown hairs can be a real curse in summer and can take all the pleasure out of slipping on a swimsuit. Smearing on a product high in salicylic acid such as Dermalogica MediBac Overnight Clearing Gel ($64; dermalogica.com.au) or Ultraceuticals Even Skintone Sensitive ($75; ultraceuticals.com) just before hair removal can help to minimise the problem. Rub in a little every day before showering, too, to keep ingrowns at bay.

SCARS

If your scar is white and has a flattened profile, you can cover it with quality concealer. Always make sure the area is scrupulously clean before applying a high-pigment, oil-free concealer such as Dermablend Cover Crème ($49.95; duit.com.au) with a brush. If the scar is recent, it could help to rub in a proven performer such as Bio-Oil (from $14.95; bio-oil.com), a specialist skincare product that reduces the appearance of stretchmarks and scars to ensure that the scar tissue is minimised in the long term. For more permanent scar reduction, consider Fraxel Restore: Dual Laser. It combines Erbium and Thulium lasers to retexture, smooth and firm the skin. Results can be seen within three treatments. Visit www.fraxel.com to find your nearest practitioner.

SPOTS ON THE BACK

Colloquially known as “bacne”, pimples on the back are very distressing when you want to wear a revealing dress or a swimsuit. Step one in treating the problem is to use a medicated body wash such as Benzac Body Wash (from pharmacies) in the shower. Then apply an acne cream or gel high in salicylic acid to each spot (try Clearasil Ultra Acne Treatment – $11.99; 1800 226 766)). To really keep zits at bay, spray on Clinique Anti-Blemish Solutions Body Spray ($40; clinique.com.au) once or twice a day. Many spas, beauty clinics and therapists offer specialised treatments for acne on the back so if it’s a persistent problem this is the wisest option. Danne clinics nationwide are expert in treating facial and by acne. Go to www.dannemking.com to locate your nearest clinic.

SPIDER VEINS

Some women develop spider veins following childbirth (all that pressure on the legs) while others are genetically disposed to the problem. Instead of wearing pantyhose throughout the summer even on the hottest of days, the best solution in all cases of spider veins is sclerotherapy. The procedure is available at cosmetic surgeons and medical practices that specialise in vein treatment. Saline injections are used to shut down the blood vessels (not as invasive as it sounds) and about four sessions are needed at an average cost of $300 to $400 each, depending on the size of the veins.

KERATOSIS PILARIS

You may not recognise the proper name for these little red bumps on the arms, nicknamed “chicken skin”, but the problem plagues a large percentage of the population. Sadly, there’s no cure but you can do something to minimise the unsightly appearance. Never use a body scrub or loofah to try to remove the thickened skin; friction can make the skin look even more inflamed. The most effective way to minimise the condition involves using a urea-based prescription cream from a dermatologist, which helps to “dissolve” the thickened skin. Contact your local GP for a referral.

SUN DAMAGED DECOLLETAGE

One of the most common problems in Australia, even women as young as 30 can develop pigmented, crepey skin on the chest. You don’t even have to be a regular sun-worshipper, either. Wearing low-cut tops any time you are outdoors without applying sunscreen can lead to a mottled-looking chest. Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) an effective way to clear pigmentation marks and make the chest look brighter and younger. Many cosmetic surgeons and beauty therapists offer IPL treatments in all capital cities. For a more intensive in-clinic procedure, consider Fraxel Restore: Dual, from approximately $1000 to $1500 per treatment.

“The new Fraxel Dual Restore laser is an ideal treatment for smoothing out crepey sun damaged skin in the décolleté area,” says Dr Mei-Heng Tan, Consultant Cosmetic Dermatologist, from Skin Savvy in Sydney (skinsavvy.com.au).“With anywhere from one to three treatments, improvements in roughness, texture and now even mottled skin pigmentation in the décolleté can be achieved. This is the best treatment available to smooth out those persistent vertical crepey chest lines.”

“The other things a woman can do to slow down the progression of sun damage and ageing in the décolleté area and to preserve her Fraxel and IPL treatment results, is to apply an SPF 15-30+ sunscreen daily to the same area. We so often protect our faces but forget to do the same for the just as exposed chest area making it more susceptible to the damaging effects of UV rays.”

If you want to follow the DIY route, though, try Superfade Original Face Cream from John Plunkett ($29.95; plunketts.com.au), an effective, over-the-counter product approved by the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) for fading age spots.

CALLUSES AND CRACKED HEELS

Unless you want to spend the summer wearing closed-in shoes, you have to spruce up your feet before slipping on sandals. Your soles may have developed calluses during winter – these thickened slabs of skin are created by friction as your feet slip and slide as you walk. For thinner calluses, simply soak your feet in warm water and scrub the hardened skin away with a foot scrub such as Avon Footworks Pedi-Brasion Scrub ($10.99; avon.com.au) or a pumice stone. Rubbing in Sally Hansen Salon Hydrating Foot Crème ($16.95; sallyhansen.com) or Avon Footworks Double Action Intense Callus Cream ($10.99) helps to dissolve the thickened skin further. If calluses are fairly thick, you must make an appointment with a podiatrist to remove them. It’s well worth the expense – you’ll leave the clinic feeling as if you are walking on air.

SAGGING OR DIMPLED SKIN

Even the most slender women can suffer sagging skin on the tummy and knees, or cellulite on the stomach, hips, thighs and bottom. Thermage treatments can assist in relieving both issues.

“Thermage technology has been around for over eight years and is the gold standard in non surgical skin tightening and firming,” says Dr. Tan.

“The new Thermage for the body procedure is an excellent treatment for firming and tightening loose sagging skin on the thighs, buttocks, knees and arms. It can help reduce the appearance of cellulite and firm up soft skin that has lost its texture, improving the appearance in a bathing suit, or when dressed in shorts. This is the perfect pre summer treatment with no downtime. Areas can be seen to improve for up to six months following the treatment. The procedure takes about one to two hours to do, depending on the extent of areas treated. Costs range from $2000 – $5000.

Your pins need a good skincare routine too, especially in winter.

Over the winter months it’s easy to ignore your legs – their primping, that is. Why bother when they don’t see the light of day.

But like the skin on your face and hands, legs become even dryer in cold weather and with all the measures we take to keep out the chill.

If you don’t fancy greeting spring – and it’s less than 3 months away – with legs adorned by a fancy set of alligator scales, it’s important to keep up a good skincare routine, just as you would your face, neck and hands.

Exfoliate

Perfect pins start with exfoliation. This will remove dead skin cells and reveal a smooth surface. You’ll also help deter ingrown hairs, and prevent the appearance of cellulite. Use a sugar or salt scrub with a loofah and rub over your legs in a circular motion. We like Napoleon Perdis Smooth Over Body Scrub, RRP$40. Exfoliate 2-3 times a week.

Moisturise

Regular moisturisation is essential. Alternate between your regular moisturiser and an extra rich (and thick) cream when skin is particularly dry. Try The Body Shop Body Butter Duo, $29.95, which offers two formulas in one, one for dry areas, and another for extra dry spots like your heels and knees.

Moisturisers will also leave your legs with a smooth feeling and a soft sheen that has a wonderful slimming effect so always apply before heading out in a leg-baring outfit. After your shower, always replenish moisture immediately. While your skin is still damp, apply a body oil such as This Works Skin Deep Dry Leg Oil, $80, which relives dryness and contains rose oil for anti-ageing benefits. YY Tip: Avoid contact with hot water which can strip the body’s natural layer of protective oils from the skin.

Bronze

A self-tanning lotion will do wonders for masking imperfections and providing your legs with an even, sunkissed skintone, even in winter. Choose from a self-tanning lotion or mousse, a gradual tanning lotion, or an instant (and wash-off) leg bronzer, like Sally Hansen Airbrush Legs, $24.95, or Le Tan Moisturising Body Bronzer, $12.99.

Pippa and Kylie take the booty prize … but experts tell how you can follow closely behind.

The phenomenon of Her (almost) Royal Hotness Pippa Middleton’s perfect posterior, and 41-year-old Kylie’s ever-young rear view on stage during her Oz tour has given many women I know the kick up the backside they’ve needed to shake their booty into shape.

Big or small, the key to a beautiful bottom is pertness and an harmonious ratio with the rest of your body.

If nature hasn’t gifted you with a great cheeks, or a sedentary lifestyle, extreme weight loss or ageing has seen your butt balloon and bust towards your knees, all is not lost.

A healthy diet and keeping active – regular walking, running, swimming, cycling … whatever your preference – is core to keeping in shape.

But for toning trouble spots, such as the bottom, you may need more targeted assistance. Younger You asked the experts and here, in no particular order, are some suggested solutions, from exercise and spa treatments to non-surgical procedures and surgery.

LIPOSUCTION – SURGICAL

Anyone experiencing disproportionate deposits of fatty tissue in the buttocks and thighs is suited to liposuction (barring, of course, contra-indicating health conditions).

It may also be useful in minimising the appearance of cellulite and dimpled skin.

Before and after liposuction by Dr Steve Merten, Pure Aesthetics

A major area of concern is at the top of the, where excess tissue produces a squarish shape, rather than a feminine curve.

The 90-minute procedure is performed under either general anaesthetic or twilight sedation in a sterile environment in a doctor’s rooms.

The latter allows the patent to move around and gives the surgeon greater access to the areas being treated.

A fluid is injected to dissolve the fat, which is then sucked out through tubing connected to a cannula.

Patients will need to take up to one week off work and will be required to wear compression garments day and night for a few weeks to assist with swelling and bruising. Any pain and discomfort can be managed with prescription or over-the-counter oral pain relief.

Within a few weeks the areas will take on a more sculpted and shapely silhouette, which will last as long as a healthy lifestyle incorporating sensible diet and an exercise program is maintained.

Ballpark Cost: From $4000.

IONITHERMIE – SPA TREATMENT

Ionithermie treatments are suited to anyone wishing to reduce the appearance of cellulite and improve skin and muscle tone, with the added benefits of slimming and detoxification.

“It is great for sculpting the thighs, hips and bottom,” says Claudia Calisto, director of Body Elite, and who brought the French system to Australia.

Before and after Ionithermie treatments

“The results are measurable with the first treatment and by the third the results are so noticeable that most women will receive compliments from their friends!”

Ionithermie can also be great for kick-starting a weight loss program, or for people who’ve lost weight but have stubborn fat deposits clinging on.

The spa-only treatment works by using two kinds of electrical stimuli, with topical application of algae and thermal clay containing active ingredients derived from plant extracts.

Without using any injections, Ionithermie penetrates deep into the cellular level, providing an effective total-body cellulite and sculpting treatment.

There is no downtime and results of up to 20cm reduction in measurements have been reported, with a marked reduction in the appearance of cellulite.

The benefits should be maintained with daily body-brushing and application of specialised at-home products.

Ballpark Cost: A package of 5 treatments, with home care products and a nutritional consultation, costs around $1200. Home care kits start at $195 and refills are available.

BUTTOCK LIFTING – SURGICAL

“Many people find that after significant weight loss their skin has lost elasticity and the ability to shrink back,” says plastic surgeon Dr Robert Drielsma, of Sydney Cosmetic Plastic Surgery in Bondi Junction.

“Excess skin is an unwanted by-product of weight loss but the good news is body contouring surgery can improve the way your look and feel.”

Dr Drielsma says that ideal candidates for buttock lift surgery are people who:

Have loss of skin elasticity in the buttock area due to extreme weight loss or ageing

A saggy appearance in the buttock area due to weight fluctuations, extreme weight loss or ageing

Buttocks that appear asymmetrical

You are ready for surgery if:

Your weight has now stabilised

You are healthy and activE

You have a realistic expectation of what buttock lift surgery can do for you.

“An outer thigh and buttock lift can be done as part of a body lift procedure or as a single procedure to improve the contour of the buttock and make it look more rejuvenated and perkier,” says Dr Drielsma.

“A buttock lift raises and tightens the skin over the buttocks. Other buttock contouring procedures include buttock implants which, just like breast implants, add volume to the backside, and liposuction to shape the buttocks by removing excess fat.”

How long does it take? A buttock lift typically takes around 3- 4 hours under a general anaesthetic; longer if its performed in tandem with other lower body contouring such as implants or thigh lifting.

Is it painful and what is the downtime? Pain following any surgery depends on the individual’s personal tolerance for pain. Mild discomfort is managed post operatively with oral medication. Recovery and care following surgery depends on the procedures performed, however you can expect to spend several nights in hospital and be limited in your physical activity for a short period of time following surgery as your body recovers.

Patients usually return to work within 2-4 weeks. Heavy lifting and vigorous activity needs to be avoided for up to 6 weeks.

What about scarring? It depends on the extent of lifting. With a body lift, a scar line runs low around the lower abdomen area and around the hips to the midline of the back. With a lateral thigh and buttock lift, the scar line is shorter from the sides to the back. The lines are designed to fit in an aesthetic way to the shape of the body. Scars fade surprisingly well over time and long term are not an issue.

Ballpark Cost: Again, costs depend on the extent of surgery and so cannot be estimated prior to consultation. Costs are made up of surgeon’s and anaesthetist’s fees and hospital costs. Some Medicare rebates apply and if you are in a private health fund, part or all of the hospital costs may be covered.

BODY TITE – SURGICAL

Procedures to zap fat can sometimes create as much of a problem as the one it treated – without the extra “padding”, there’s the risk of being left with a whole lot of loose skin.

Body Tite promises to address both fat and skin using a technology called RFAL, or Radio Frequency Assisted Liposuction.

In addition to fat reduction, which is said to be gentler due a pre-heating process, Body Tite uses the oscillation of radio frequency to essentially “shrink” skin into a tighter state.

Traditional liposuction doesn’t address slack skin, which may be an issue for people who’ve experienced the stretching that comes with weight fluctuation or pregnancy, or the loss of elasticity with age.

Before and after Body Tite, by Dr Jospeh Ajaka

“Body Tite uses radiofrequency to melt fat, tighten skin and stop bleeding, thus causes less bruising and allows a quick recovery time,” says cosmetic surgeon Dr Joseph Ajaka, of Sydney’s Cosmos Cosmetic Clinic.

The system can be used on most of the areas that traditional liposuction is performed, such as the hips, buttocks, thighs, arms and neck and “is very useful for tightening of the skin post-pregnancy and for treating `tuck shop’ arms,” adds Dr Ajaka.

A patient is given light sedation, followed by a small incision and the injection of a numbing solution into the area to be treated.

A cannula is then passed under the skin which has an external probe to measure the temperature of the skin to ensure uniform energy delivery throughout the treatment area.

The doctor delivers radiofrequency into the area until he/she feels it has melted enough fat and tightened the skin. The procedure takes between one and two hours. Some swelling and a feeling of tightness in the skin is to be expected and the patient is asked to wear a compression garment for a week afterwards.

Dr Ajaka says the system is quicker than laser-assisted lipolysis “and may be more effective for skin tightening.

“Patients see optimum results for their body shape in 6 weeks and 3 months for the skin tightening.”

Ballpark cost: Between $3-$12,000 depending on the size of the area(s) to be treated.

ALMA ACCENT XL – NON SURGICAL

Accent body contouring is a non-invasive procedure using a radio frequency (RF) device to give the abdomen a flatter and smoother profile, slim the hips, thighs and buttocks and firm the upper arms without incisions, pain or downtime.

A handheld device is used to apply deep thermal heating to the fat bundles to bring about new collagen formation and shrink fat cells. It also stimulates circulation, which helps drain trapped fatty deposits and toxins.

Before and after Alma Accent XL treatments

“The Alma Accent XL has been our preferred skin tightenting and skin resurfacing technology for the past 12 months,” says Dr Philippa McCaffery of Clearskincare clinics.

“It is easy to use, the results are consistent and our staff and clients love it. The treatments are comfortable with a combination of local anaesthetic and skin cooling.

“Downtime is generally 1-2 days, a much more do-able option for most clients than 71-10 days downtime with fractional CO2 laser.”

Depending on the area, treatment may take 15-45 minutes. Patients will see an immediate visible improvement, but results are cumulative over ensuing months.

Generally, no more than 5-7 treatments at 2-week intervals are required.

Ballpark Cost: Prices range from $250-$350 per treatment.

BUTT BLASTERS – EXERCISE

If you can’t get to a gym or class, Blake Worrall-Thompson, owner and director of Ministry of Wellbeing (1300 80 40 92), has devised some butt blasters to do on your own:

Glute Bridges: Lying on your back with your knees bent and feet flat on the floor push your bum up and squeeze it at the bottom of the movement, when you come down stop just before your bum hits the ground and repeat the exercise. Set of 20

Walking lunges: stepping out with one leg, drop the back knee towards the ground and push up with your front leg so you become upright. Then step out with the other leg and complete the same exercise. 20 each leg.

Hamstring tucks: Lying down with your feet placed on top of a swiss ball, pick your hips up off the ground and then tuck the ball in towards your body using your hamstring.

Step ups: Step up on to a box or bench and step down. 20 each side.

Side raises: Lying on your side, keeping your body in alignment lift your top leg as high as you can keeping your head, hips and feet in a straight line. 20 each side.

This routine should be completed 3 times a week and as you get stronger look to add weights to the exercises. This in conjunction with some form of cardio will give you the butt you’re looking for in 4 weeks!

It’s important that you also look at your eating. Cut out sugar (taking part in alcohol-free Dry July to raise money for cancer research will help a lot; check out www.dryjuly.com) – and the body fat will slide off you!

BOOTY WORKOUT – PILATES

Pilates is said to be the secret to Pippa Middleton’s perfect posterior. It is an exercise system focused on building strength without bulk, improving flexibility and agility, developed in the 1920s by physical trainer Joseph H. Pilates.

Pilates can involve machinery or be done on a mat, often utilising various pieces of equipment. The primary focus is on awareness of the spine, proper breathing, core strength and flexibility.

The outcome is strong and supple body, toned tummy and bottom, balanced legs and a strong back. Pilates expert Renee Scott, owner of Balance Moves studio in Bondi Beach, Sydney (02 9300 9444), has devised these bottom-firming exercises to do at home.

All exercises are recommendations only and at your own risk. See a doctor for clearance if necessary.

Pelvic lift. Lie on your back with bent knees, legs hip width apart and parallel. Start lifting your bottom toward the ceiling, slowly rolling and articulating your spine, vertebra by vertebra. Hold it at the point where the hips and shoulders are in one diagonal line. Then peel back down in the same fashion to the starting position. Focus on contracting your hamstrings and glutes. Do this 5-10 times.

Pelvic lift pulses. As above, but when you reach the upward position hold it there and add pulses, pushing your bottom a few centimetres further to the ceiling 10-20 times, then roll back down.

Pelvic lift rotations. Lift as above and then rotate through the waist to tilt one side of the body, lowering a buttock cheek to the floor. Move back up to full height and tilt and lower the other side. Repeat 5-10 times.

Side kick leg series:

Lie on your side so that your body is in one line, from tail bone to head. Have your knees bent in front of your body, heels in line with the bottom. Focus on keeping your torso stable and straight while moving your leg, as if you were wearing a very firm corset. Keep your feet glued together and open the top knee to the ceiling, opening through the hip and engaging the glute (buttock) muscle, then lower. Repeat this 10 times and do on the other side.

Lie on your side as above, this time with the legs straight. Lift the top leg to hip height and, keeping the torso stable) move the top leg forward and back. Use controlled movements rather than “swinging” your leg, as the aim is not to move the hips but to work the glute. Do 5 forward-back moves on each side.

In the same position as above, lift the leg to hip height with a slight rotation of the foot and knee from the hip joint. Do 10 small circles of the leg in each direction and then turn to the other side and repeat.

Plank on the elbows. Roll onto your stomach and come into a plank (see picture above). You can stay on your knees or move to the full position on your toes. Focus on drawing in your stomach to the lower spine, like you were doing up a tight belt. Keep your shoulders away from your ears, which will make your back muscles work harder, and squeeze your glutes. Hold for 30-60 seconds. Repeat several times if you wish.

Jane Fonda is still a sex siren at 73. Her secret? It's a lifetime's work!

The toast of this year’s Cannes Film Festival – the annual parade of the stunning, rich and famous – was a 73-year-old woman.

Jane Fonda had jaws hitting the ground across the French Riviera resort as she posed on red carpets and sashayed down supermodel Naomi Campbell’s fashion fundraiser catwalk in a series of goggle-worthy gowns encasing a killer hourglass figure the envy of a 30-year-old. Not to mention the youthful, dewy face atop it. Old age has never looked better!

She’s never made any secret of the fact she’s had plastic surgery: ”I owe 30 per cent to genes, 30 per cent to good sex, 30 per cent to sport and healthy lifestyle with proper nutrition, and for the remaining 10 per cent I have to thank my plastic surgeon.” Perhaps more, but whatever …

Married three times (last to TV tycoon Ted Turner), Jane has been with a 67-year-old toyboy, Hollywood music producer Richard Perry, since 2008 and credits their life together as her fountain of youth: “I’m happier, the sex is better, and I understand life better,” she says.

Don’t hate Jane because she’s beautiful. Or looks nearly half her age.

Despite her great love life and plastic surgery, her youthful secret is the result of a lifetime’s body of hard work. Younger You asked the experts how she’s done it.

Jane Fonda as Barbarella in the 60s and at the Cannes Film Festival this month, aged 73

Female physiques start changing shape during menopause as oestrogen declines. Weight is usually gained, as the body fights to retain as much oestrogen as possible, especially around the mid-region. Waists and bellies broaden.

But with the proper nutrition, exercise and attention to hormone imbalances, these changes can be minimised and the hourglass maintained, a la Fonda.

Jane was the product of a brilliant but troubled family. Her socialite mother, Frances, committed suicide while in psychiatric care when Jane was 12. Her legendary actor father Henry remarried soon after, to a woman only 10 years older than his daughter. Jane and her actor brother Peter developed a strong bond with their young stepmother but this too ended when Henry Fonda divorced Susan Blanchard while Jane was in her late teens.

Whether directly related or not, Jane suffered from eating disorders such as bulimia during her early acting career in the 1960s; she was the quintessential (but sassy) sex kitten.in such movies as Sunday in New York, Cat Ballou , Barefoot In The Park and Barbarella.

Her public persona changed forever when she became a reviled anti-Vietnam War political activist in the early 70s, while winning her first of two Oscars in 1971, playing a prostitute in Klute.

While filming The China Syndrome in the late 70s, Jane fractured her foot and could no longer pursue her ballet passion. She turned to aerobics and strengthening exercises under the direction of trainer Leni Cazden. From this emerged The Jane Fonda Workout and so began her second career.

In 1982 she released her first exercise video, Jane Fonda’s Workout, based on her best-selling book. The video sold 17 million. She has subsequently released 24 workout videos, five workout books and 13 audio programs, the latest last year.

Her recent DVD targets people over the age of 50, swapping her famous high-impact aerobics of old for shorter workouts incorporating weight-lifting and walking. “Go for the burn” has been replaced by “Move It Or Lose It”, based on doing a little exercise every day.

Says natural therapist Jennifer Chalmers, of Phoenix Holistic Centre in Sydney’s Bondi Junction: “Jane Fonda certainly looks good for her age, and has been a favourite of mine from those early fitness videos.

“The metabolism slows down at menopause and it’s important to keep active, ideally on a daily basis.

“The diet needs to be high in phytoestrogens, found in soy products, linseeds, fruits, vegetables, lentils, legumes and wholegrains. Not only do they keep the skin looking healthy but they also alter the body’s need to gain fat.

“These foods are able to prevent excess fat being stored, without producing the unwanted stronger effects of oestrogen.

“Adding a variety of seaweeds to your diet increases many nutrients that are beneficial to hair growth and health. You may like to try eating sushi on a regular basis, as well as adding chopped seaweeds to soups, salads and stir-fries.

“Exercise is also important to shape the body and improve the metabolic rate. Weight-bearing exercise as well as moderate aerobic activity is necessary with a minimum of 30 minutes every day being beneficial.

“In general, cells age due to the damage from free radicals, which are produced from the normal metabolic processes that occur in the body. Having a diet rich in substances known as antioxidants (found in the foods mentioned above), that are capable of neutralising the effects of free radical damage in the body.

“This prevents cellular damage, which results in disease and premature ageing. Such properties are found in all types of berries, broccoli (and other vegetables from the cruciferous family), garlic, tomatoes and green tea. There are some spices that have been shown to have excellent anti-oxidant activity in the body, such as cinnamon, turmeric and oregano.

“Herbs and supplements that keep the skin toned and elastic are essential; rich in Vitamin C and bioflavanoids as well as phytoestrogens, herbs such as Sarsaparilla, Squaw Vine, Chinese Angelica (Dong Quai) and Rosehips help to tone tissues and provide elasticity. Essential fatty acids such as those found in Evening Primrose Oil and Linseeds (or Flaxseeds) are good to improve connective tissue.

“There are also a range of herbs that have been shown to have anti-aging properties. These herbs can protect the body from the free-radical damage that accelerates the aging process Some of these herbs include Korean Ginseng, Siberian Ginseng, Reishi Mushroom, Gingko Biloba, Ashwagandha, Bilberry, Hawthorn and St Mary’s Thistle.

“Herbs with anti-ageing properties may be useful in a variety of forms, such as soaps, cosmetics, creams and ointments as well as taken internally as herbal teas and/or medicine.”

Adds fitness guru Blake Worrall-Tompson of Sydney’s Ministry Of Wellbeing: for Jane to look as impressive as she has there are a number of things that would have taken place to maintain that incredible figure.

“The most obvious one is that her health is a priority and part of her everyday life.

“For most people the work/life balance has swung heavily to getting through the working week without feeling too drained and looking to the weekends to restore the body. This has led to a serious increase in weight for the average person

“As women age there does need to be a shift in focus with their exercise regime and unfortunately it’s not even an age thing anymore. One in 5 women suffer from Polycystic Ovary Syndrom (PCOS) and the numbers will increase dramatically without women gaining control of their health. Every woman’s exercise regime needs to be tailored to the stress levels and hormonal function of their bodies.

“A large percentage of Ministry of Wellbeing’s clientele will have a stress or hormonal function test to work out what is going on with their bodies. Quite often we need to clean up the stresses on their body before we even address how `hard’ their exercise is going to be. For a lot of these people the ‘go hard/go home’ approach isn’t working. I think it is still really important to work hard but cleaning up the diet and food habits that have been created are just as important.

“For Jane it’s ‘eat clean to look lean’. Don’t let convenience get the better of you. Convenient food is bad food. There is a saying: K.I.S.S – keep it simple stupid. It works with food. Take an extra 10 minutes each day to prepare food, whether it be a salad, veggie sticks, nuts and seeds and you’ll still have that dream body like Jane well into your 70’s!”

Younger You's beautiful bride-to-be Mia Carter shares her slim-and-spruce wedding day countdown.

Mia Carter is the Brand Manager for Younger You, as well as for our sister sites The Knot and Primped. But Mia, 32, leads a double life … as a Bridezilla. No, that’s not fair! She is a perfectly composed and amazingly well organised bride-to-be, but one on a mission – to be as slim, sleek and glowing as can be when she marries her fiance Andrew in November. Each week Mia will share the latest step in her wedding day beauty blitz, as well as the treatments her mother Lusien (left, with Mia) and bridesmaids are trialling in preparation for the big day. This week, the Ionithermie shape up, slim down and detox.

There’s a lot that goes into planning a wedding. There’s the venue, the wedding gown, the photographer, the guest list, the flowers and, of course, the bridal body.

I’m not alone in wanting to look my best for my big day. According to the many wedding magazines and bridal forums I’ve been reading, this is a huge focus for most brides. In fact, a recent survey conducted by www.TheKnot.com.au showed that 70 per cent of brides wanted to lose at least 5kg before their wedding day.

I’ve been hitting the gym and trying to eat healthily, but there’s nothing like a honeymoon bikini to incentivise a bride to take things up a notch. So once I heard about Ionithermie, I knew I had to try it for myself.

WHAT IS IONITHERMIE

A revolutionary program developed in France, Ionithermie has proven results in weight loss, cellulite reduction and body-reshaping. It has a 3-prong approach, consisting of:

Ionithermie In-Salon Treatments

Ionithermie Home Care

Nutrition Plan

WHAT TO EXPECT

I had an initial consultation with the extremely knowledgeable Claudia Calisto, who is not only a registered nutritionist but also owns Body Elite, the distributor of the Ionithermie program in Australia.

My first Ionithermie consultation with Claudia Calisto

Claudia asked me about my daily food intake, alcohol consumption and exercise habits, took my height and weight measurements, and worked with me to set my size and weight loss goals. Then it was time to get started on the program!

IONITHERMIE IN-SALON TREATMENTS

The treatments involve a unique weight loss and body-sculpting system that results in loss of centimetres and reduction of cellulite.

My therapist, the delightful Joanne at Alexandria, started with some dry body brushing on my legs and stomach to stimulate the lymphatic system and circulation, followed by a body toner and a cream consisting of active ingredients, detoxifying algae and stimulating iodine.

Claudia gets my measure!

I lay down and was covered with cloths soaked in active ingredients, and then iodine-rich clay. Electrodes (similar to the type used at the physio) were attached at key points on my legs and stomach, to cause muscle contractions, help the products to penetrate the skin, remineralise the cells and detoxify the body.

After 30 minutes, the clay has hardened and peels off easily, so there’s no need to shower afterwards – in fact, it’s better if you don’t, so the products will continue to work. A special moisturiser is applied as a finishing touch, and then I’m ready to go!

IONITHERMIE HOME CARE

The Ionithermie home care system is essential to achieving maximum results during your program. Before your shower, you start by dry body brushing with a natural bristle body brush, starting with the soles of the feet and working towards the heart.

After your shower, apply the Ionithermie Tonic Silhouette, RRP $35, which contains vitamins to prepare the skin for the treatment products. Next, Formula A+B, from $108, is applied to your problem areas, to help promote micro-circulation and help the body to detoxify with active ingredients such as algae, ivy extract, and guarana.

The next step is the Pro-Métasystème, $132, which is a fine emulsion containing algae and guarana to help circulation, as well as sweet almond oil to tone and firm the skin.

Finally, the Body Milk with avocado oil, $47, is applied to moisturise and soothe the skin.

THE NUTRITIONAL PLAN

As part of the Ionithermie program, it’s necessary to follow Claudia Calisto’s Eat Right Plan. After all, there’s no use in detoxifying the body from the outside if you are just going to fill it up with junk.

The Eat Right Plan is based around eating for your blood type. Each person on the Ionithermie program is assessed individually according to their blood type and goals, so everyone is assigned their own eating plan.

As a Blood Type A, Claudia advised me that I should be eating a mostly-vegetarian, plant-based diet, filled with vegetables, low-sugar fruit such as green apples, and healthy carbs like brown rice. I also need to cut out all processed sugar, dairy and red meat, and most importantly, all alcohol.

My nutritional plan took a little bit of time to get used to, as almost all my food needs to be prepared from scratch. As someone who’s not a huge fan of cooking, it was a bit of a shock to be preparing all my meals and snacks (such as white bean casserole, pumpkin dip and homemade muesli) every day.

However, with the help of Claudia’s recipes and dedicating some extra time to cooking on the weekends, it’s becoming a part of my regular routine.

FOR BEST RESULTS

You should do Ionithermie in-salon treatments at least twice a week, for a total of 10 sessions.

The Ionithermie home care should be used every day, in combination with dry body brushing.

The Eat Right nutritional plan needs to be followed so that you are putting the right fuel into your body to be leaner, cleaner and more energetic.

Stay tuned to see my results half way through the Ionithermie program!

Why your skincare routine needs to shift along with your hormones.

Throughout your 20s, your body sheds about a million skin cells every 40 minutes. Like a snake sloughing off its skin, this almost constant action keeps the skin looking dewy and youthful. The entire epidermis rejuvenates itself every 28 days or so. But by the time you reach 40, shedding slowdown reduces this renewal process to a more leisurely 45 days.

The bad news is that it’s only one of a number of physiological changes that start during your fifth decade. In the years leading up to menopause, the skin becomes drier because of declining oestrogen levels and you start to lose things that you once took for granted like a smooth forehead and a firm jawline.

The good news is that you don’t have to stockpile soy or oestrogen supplements to stay looking good in spite of gravity’s pull and dehydration and loss of firmness linked to hormonal changes. Skincare that offers real solutions, not just routines, teamed with the right exercise and diet plan go a long way in delaying the ageing clock.

Remember, though, that like any form of skin ageing – environmental or chronological – hormonal ageing doesn’t effect everyone to the same degree. Estee Lauder was the first skincare brand to address the effects of hormonal ageing in 1998. But as more players such as Clarins, Lancome and L’Oreal have entered the “change of life” skincare arena, they haven’t been so quick to throw the “M” word around.

Most brands prefer not to pigeonhole women based on age because, like many things in life, the playing field isn’t level. And that’s why most skincare targeted at women in their 40s and 50s and 60s dances around age and hormonal issues and focuses on skin needs, not a date on the calendar.

Skin In Your 40s

The decades of wear and tear really start to show. The youthful network of collagen and elastin fibres are gradually replaced with stiffer, thicker ones. A process that causes the skin to sag and become more wrinkled. Expression lines deepen and pigmentation marks start to crop up on the cheeks. Tiny capillaries stretch and leak, leading to broken veins.

Even if you weren’t as careful as you should have been about preventing sun damage in your 20s and 30s, you really should be scrupulous about it now that hormonal change is causing the skin to thin further and become more susceptible to sun exposure. Hamilton Sensitive Sunscreen SPF30+, which contains the most advanced sunscreen technology in the world, also contains moisturising ingredients to provide extra hydration.

Click here for our product gallery with all the skincare you’ll need to combat the effects of hormal changes.

Declining oestrogen levels are also responsible for 30 per cent of women in their 30s and 10 per cent in those in their 40s developing adult acne, even if they didn’t suffer from pimples when they were younger.

As oestrogen levels drop, more androgenic hormones gain ascendancy. Linked to testosterone, they prompt the body to produce more “masculine” qualities such as more facial hair, receding hair and increased oil production. Adult acne consists of small red bumps, not cysts, and hormonal breakouts advertise their presence with a crop of zits along the jawline and around the mouth.

Action Plan: Skin loses up to 30 per cent of its moisture content as it ages, so more frequent moisturising is needed to keep it smooth and supple. Cleansing is vital, too, in maintaining the radiance of skin robbed of moisture because of hormonal decline.

Always use a hydrating cleanser such as Dove Moisture Facial Cleanser, RRP$6.99, to maintain the skin’s natural oils and strengthen its natural barrier. If you use a cleansing product that is drying, your skin has to work overtime for hours just to restore the skin to its natural state, let alone increase its moisture content.

If you haven’t been using a peptide-rich moisturiser, it’s time to start. Short-chain peptides are best because they heal the skin and stimulate collagen production. Fight back with Kiehl’s High-Potency Skin-Firming Concentrate, $95, Olay Micro-Sculpting Cream, $49.99, and Clarins Vital Light Day, and Night, $125 each, which contains potent plant extracts for increased hydration.

If adult acne is a problem, it’s important to use skin-clearing products that don’t strip the skin of natural oils, as treatments formulated fore teenagers do. Dab on Lalisse Anti-Spot Skin Serum 1, from $22.95.

Skin In Your 50s

Most women experience menopause in their late 40s or early 50s. Oestrogen production grinds to a halt and the skin changes dramatically. Thirty per cent of your skin’s collagen is lost within the first five years of menopause.

The result? The face starts to drop and sag and you’ll also see more cellulite and pigmentation. The skin becomes even drier. Facial bones begin to shrink, particularly in smokers, and wrinkles deepen because the skin becomes “too big” for the bones underneath. A simultanous loss of facial plumpness contributes to a more “hollowed” facial look.

Action Plan: Parched skin needs a significant moisture boost. Change to a moisturiser that offers hygroscopic hydration. There’s no need to become a chemist, a cream, serum or lotion rich in hyaluronic acid does the job because it binds water to the skin’s surface to make it look plumper.

New to Australia is the Apot.Care range from France which uses opthalmologic-grade hyaluronic acid to detoxify and protect the skin. Apot-Care Creme Irido-Radiante, $180 (available at Mecca Cosmetica), enhances collagen protection and relaxes the appearance of wrinkles, too.

L’Oreal Paris Age Perfect Intensive Skin Re-Support Serum, $31.95, provides the highest percentage of active-anti-ageing ingredients in the best-selling Age Perfect range. Very moisturising, it is specially formulated for post-menopausal skin and targets sagging, dehydrated skin.

Increased sensitivity is another by-product of hormonal decline. L’Occitane Shea Cotton Ultra Comforting Serum, $49.95, calms on-going redness and irritation and is safe for sudden allergic reactions.

The effects of hormonal decline due to the menopause are felt around the clock. If your skin feels drier, thinner and less elastic by day, it needs a rebalancing treatment overnight.

A regenerating night cream or treatment is essential from now on. Recommended buys: Lancome Renergie Lift Volumetry Night Cream, $165,Estee Lauder Time Zone Night Anti-Line Wrinkle Creme, $135 and Alpha-H Liquid Gold Intensive Night Serum, $99 (for stockists call 1800 659 777).

Loss of volume in the face also leads to hollows and dark circles under the eyes. Brighten up tired-looking eyes with an eye cream that lightens and plumps the delicate skin around the eye area such as Prevage Eye Ultra Protection Anti-aging Moisturizer, $150, or Olay Regenerist Anti-Ageing Roller, $32.49, a roll-on product that massages and soothes the eyes.
